And one of the multitude answered and said, Master,
I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb
spirit;
And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he
foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away:
and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him
out; and they could not.
He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation,
how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer
you? bring him unto me.
And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him,
straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground,
and wallowed foaming.
And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this
came unto him? And he said, of a child.
And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the
waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing,
have compassion on us, and help us. Jesus said unto him,
If thou canst believe, ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE
TO HIM THAT BELIEVETH.

And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said
with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.
When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he
rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and
deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no
more into him. And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and
came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that
many said, He is dead. But Jesus took him by the hand,
and lifted him up; and he arose.
Mark 9:17-27

1. Many conditions are caused by evil spirits. The dumb
condition of this young man was caused by evil spirits.
And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have
brought unto thee my son, which hath a DUMB SPIRIT;
Mark 9:17

2. Evil spirits cause people to fall to the ground to roll
around and scream. This is a common phenomenon
where evil spirits inhabit people.
And wheresoever he taketh him, HE TEARETH HIM: and
he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away:
and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out;
and they could not.
Mark 9:18

3. Jesus wanted us to learn how to cast out devils without
Him being physically present.
He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how
long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring
him unto me.
Mark 9:19

4. Demons begin to manifest when they encounter
the presence of the power of God. That is why the
boy started reacting when he saw Jesus. The main
characteristic manifestations that indicate the
presence of demon activity are:
a. The person is literally torn apart by the demon
b. Falling to the ground
c. Wallowing or rolling on the ground
d. Foaming at the mouth or vomiting
And they brought him unto him: and WHEN HE SAW
HIM, straightway the SPIRIT TARE HIM; and he fell on
the ground, and wallowed foaming.
Mark 9:20

The reason why demonized people foam at the mouth is
that spirits usually come in and go out of people through their
mouths. A number of people who have had the experience of
going out and coming back into their bodies (through near death
experiences, for example) they describe how they entered back
into their bodies through their mouths. Likewise, the mouth
seems to be the portal for the entry and departure of demons.

5. As is the case of this boy, many people are possessed
with evil spirits from childhood. Evil spirits enter
children’s lives through television, sexual molestation
and family witchcraft practices.
And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came
unto him? And he said, OF A CHILD.
Mark 9:21

6. Many people are both believers and unbelievers. In
one breath the man said he believed. In another breath
he said, “Please help my unbelief.” God is merciful.
And He helps us even though we have unbelief.
And straightway the father of the child cried out, and
said with tears, Lord, I BELIEVE; HELP THOU MINE
UNBELIEF. When Jesus saw that the people came running
together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou
dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and
enter no more into him.
Mark 9:24-25

5. When evil spirits come out of people, they become still
and they look as though they are dead or asleep. This
is the sign that they have been delivered.
And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of
him: and HE WAS AS ONE DEAD; insomuch that many
said, He is dead.
But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he
arose.
Mark 9:26-27

6. The miracle healing of the epileptic boy demonstrates
the love of God, the compassion of Jesus Christ, the
greatness of Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy
Spirit.
… For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he
might DESTROY THE WORKS OF THE DEVIL.
1 John 3:8
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten
Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish,
but have everlasting life.
John 3:16

7. “…all things are possible to him that believeth” (Mark
9:23) were the words of Jesus to reassure and to help
the man to receive his salvation and healing.

8. The devil wanted to destroy the boy and cast him into
the fire (Mark 9:22). This is the plan of the devil for
you; to destroy you and cast you into the fires of hell.
The devil wants to take us into the fires of hell. But Jesus has
come to set us free so that we wouldn’t have to go into the lake
of fire.
Receive Jesus Christ as your Saviour. He will wash you with
his blood and you will escape the fire of hell.
